Sarah French’s No. 5 Quilt Circa 1850

Description

This is a very large, well used and loved quilt, approximately 97 by 99 inches. The fabric pieces are a great collection from this time period and are in very good condition. There is some fraying at the top of the quilt and along the binding. The batting is lightweight and the stitching all done by hand. The bottom right side of the quilt has a dark brown block that may be a repair as it appears to have been added over another block. It appears there is another repair at the top of the quilt in one of the blocks. Both repairs were done with fabric from the same time frame as the quilt. There is a beautiful chintz strip at the very bottom of the quilt.

Sarah’s signature is on the back. As you can see from the photos, there is staining on the back that does come through to the front in a few places that doesn’t detract from the overall appearance.
